Inspector Jonathan[1] "Snoopy" Beegle was a British government official with relationships in the highest levels of government. He was assigned aboard the Toronto with his student Rainer Hofstedt as his scientific assistant. He took his monitoring job seriously and was breathing down Brandt's neck. He was treated with caution by the crew who feared that he would ruin their venture. He was selected to accompany Tom Driscoll in an exploratory flight to Nugget to evaluate information from the planet, and report irregularities to the government.

Although no engineer, he took control of the over-c COM unit during the jump. He was killed when the COM console overloaded during the over-c jump and exploded. After that event the ship lost contact with HQ. His demise caused Rainer to replace him for the flight.

Death

Inspector Beegle discovered the true nature of the Nugget and decided to inform the government about it. Worrying about his life, he took his gun and headed to the COM room. There, he initiated the communication, but was interrupted by Ned, the AI, who caused an explosion that killed the inspector and disabled the COM unit to render it unusable for the rest of the operation.
